We already know and love Japonesque for their professional-grade makeup brushes. If you’ve browsed the aisles of Ulta lately, you might have noticed that the brand has expanded quite a bit.
The packaging is what will most likely catch your attention at first — it’s absolutely gorgeous! I’m a believer that vanity packaging is always a wonderful added touch to products. It makes reaching for them that much more fun.
I recently tried a few Japonesque goodies, and I’ll begin with what became my favorite of the bunch. Velvet Touch Eye Shadow Palette #1 is the quintessential smokey eye palette. Upon first glance I thought to myself, “Tom Ford!” — not because of the formula or pigmentation — but because of the way the shadows are layed out. If you’ve seen the Tom Ford quads before, you know what I’m talking about.
The palette comes with 4 shades, 3 of them in varying charcoal tones and 1 highlight/blending color. What’s unique about this formula is the layering ability; the colors pick up light to medium pigment on a brush but can be built up so easily and without feeling heavy on the lids. With that being said, I think the name “Velvet Touch” was perfectly chosen for this product. Another Japonesque item worth mentioning is the Makeup Setting Spray. I double-duty this face mattifier as a pigment enhancer for the palette — essentially, “foiling” the dry powder shadows to intensify the deep grey colors. Of course, it sets liquid makeup on the face nicely as well. It helped to prolong oil breakthrough on my combination skin during a recent few warm days here in New York.
To pair with the aforementioned smokey eye, I like using Velvet Touch Blush in Shade 4, a bright cool-toned pink. It looks intense in the pan, but much like the softness of the shadows, this blush embodies the same formula. I have light skin, so bold blush colors are easily overdone on me — I didn’t find that the case with this one at all. The original Blush Brush works nicely to pick up just the right amount of product.
Overall, I like the Japonesque makeup line for easy, foolproof looks that make a statement without being over-the-top. Japonesque products can be found at ULTA or on the Japonesque website. What are your favorites from this line? Let’s talk! Send your feedback or questions.
