Like anything in life that involves beauty and women, when it comes to waxing there’s a method to the madness.

  • Luckily, Noemi Grupenmager, the woman who coined the term ‘Brazilian wax’ and the pioneer behind an organic, elastic ouch-free wax shared her secrets to a pain free wax session.
  • I know what you’re thinking: ‘As if there’s such a thing!’ But believe me on this—her gooey, green elastic wax actually comes thisclose to making it feasible.
  • “A high-quality wax is only one piece of the puzzle,” said Grupenmager. “There is a technique that needs to be utilized along with the use of elastic wax for optimal, pain-free hair removal.”

Follow her steps for a pain free wax session.

Let Your Hair Grow

Do: Let your hair grow out about one-eighth to one-quarter of an inch before going in for waxing. Hair that’s shorter than the required amount will be difficult to pull making your wax session pointless.

Beware of Skin Peels & Treatments

Don’t: Get a skin peel on the same week of your appointment. “Wait at least a week and half for a wax session if you regularly get a glycolic or alpha hydroxy peel,” said Erika Pedraza, an esthetician with 11 years of experience who works at Uni K. Wax salon that’s located in North Miami Beach.

Aunt Flow™ Doesn’t Like Wax

Don’t: Wax during your menstrual cycle. As if you needed another item to add to your long list of Things You Can’t Do While on Your Period™. If you are sensitive while you’re riding the Crimson Waves™, you might want to avoid a bikini wax during those days.

Beware DIY Bikini Wax

Don’t: Try an at-home bikini wax. “At home waxing is one DIY beauty treatment you must leave to the professionals,” she advised. “I believe that waxing should never be performed at home for many, many reasons,” said Grupenmager. “Even waxers do not do their own waxing, they let a co-waxer treat them instead.”

Schedule a Follow Up

Do: Enjoy the way your skin feels after your wax and remember to schedule a follow up. Uni K’s special “touch up” service is really convenient and helpful when transitioning your hair growth pattern from shaving to waxing. “Touch up sessions (up to 12 days after your wax) will help remove hair that was shaved and could not be waxed during the first session because they were too short,” said Grupenmager.

Deep-Six Numbing Creams

Don’t: Use numbing products or pain relief medicine. Remember, Uni K. Wax salons’ wax are relatively ouch-free. Essential oils are infused within the tree resin and beeswax mixture that helps it to moisturize your skin after waxing.

Slip, Slop, Slap

Do: Use sunscreen after your session. Using sun protection is crucial during the first 24 hours after waxing in order to avoid redness, sun burn, and irritation.

Avoid Sun Burns

Don’t: Book an appointment if you have a sun burn. “If you had a recent sun burn exposure, your skin’s too sensitive for a waxing,” advised Pedraza, an alumnus of Broward Career Institute. Allow it to heal, and then book an appointment a week later.

Pamper Skin for Waxing

Do: Prepare your skin for waxing. “Use products to prepare the skin like an anti-spetic and afterwards chamomile cream, aloe vera gel, and sunscreen with SPF,” said Pedraza to prevent ingrown hairs and scarring. “Practice this routine a week beforehand for optimal results.”

Acne Medications

Do: Let your waxer know of any medications you’re taking. If you are under the use of AHA, Renova®, Retin-A® or corticosteroids such as hydro-cortisone, prednisone, Kenalog®, and Elocon® you should not get waxed in the treated areas. If you are under the treatment of Accutane® you should avoid waxing.

Exfoliate Your Skin

Don’t: Exfoliate one to two days before and after your wax since Uni K’s unique wax will also exfoliate your skin while removing unwanted hair.

Ingrown Hairs

Do: Exfoliate in between waxing to reduce the chance of
ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs is a condition where hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin.

Drink H20

Do: Drink lots of water. In order to have the best waxing results, it is best to keep your skin healthy and hydrated. “This entails drinking lots of water (to hydrate from the inside out) and using skin care products that prepare the skin for a great hair removal experience,” said Grupenmager.

Skip the Drink

Don’t: Drink prior to your appointment. Alcohol (and other stimulants such as caffeine) tightens pores, so it’s not a good idea to consume before getting waxed.
